Chasing the Customer … Yesterday – 40 years ago

UPCIt all started in Indianapolis

Yesterday, 40 years ago, a cashier at Marsh Supermarkets scanned a pack of gum and the Uniform Product Code (UPC) started its journey to becoming the standard for tracking merchandise (and just about anything else) at retail.

             What’s Next?

                                       Innovation and Entrepreneurship

Password tattoo

  • An electronic tattoo that can be used to authenticate a user.
  • Another option in a similar vein: Vitamin authentication, a pill that can be ingested and then battery-powered with stomach acid to produce an 18-bit internal signal. After that, the swallower’s whole body becomes a password.

        Who’s Making It Happen?

That’s  some of what Dr. Regina Dugan and the folk’s at Google’s Advanced Technology And Products center are working on. As she says:

  • 800px-Dr._Regina_E._Dugan“If you want to ensure failure in your innovation, try removing the risks,”
  • “Boredom is the enemy of innovation.”
  • ATAP is ” … a small, lean, and agile group that is unafraid of failure,”
  • ATAP will “… celebrate impatience.”
  • “The future is what we choose to make.”
  • “We make what we believe in.”
  • “We’re a small band of pirates trying to do epic sh*t,”

Author’s note: How can someone that interesting, innovative and phrase creative — write a doctoral thesis entitled, “Axisymmetric buoyant jets in a cross flow with shear transition and mixing.”

 Innovation and Entrepreneurship

“This defines entrepreneur and entrepreneurship – the entrepreneurDrucker always searches for change, responds to it, and exploits it as an opportunity.” ― Peter F. DruckerInnovation and Entrepreneurship: Practice and Principles

So … it looks like I&E is flourishing at Google’s ATAP labs. That’s good!!!
